AZ aka Amir Zainorin
https://amirzainorin.com/
is a Malaysian-born, Copenhagen-based interdisciplinary artist whose work
explores identity, memory, and cultural hybridity. His practice draws from his own transnational
life: growing up in Malaysia, studying in the U.S., and living in Denmark for over two decades.
These migrations inform his visual and material language, often bridging the personal and
political through symbolic gestures and layered processes.
Drawing from lived experience and a phenomenological approach, Amir's installations and
performances often incorporate x-rays, atlases, rubber stamps, gauze, and traditional forms like
the labu sayong and kompang, reimagined through migration and transformation.
His upcoming solo exhibition Rhythm of Identity at Kunstpakhuset, Denmark, features Malaysian
frame drums fitted with x-ray films in place of traditional skins—transforming instruments of
ritual into poetic artifacts of displacement and belonging.
Amir is the founder of Jambatan and the Stateless Mind Pavilion, platforms for cross-cultural and
diasporic dialogue. He has received support from the Danish Arts Foundation, Nordic Culture
Fund, and the National Art Gallery Malaysia.
